Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO provided information on the Army's efforts to improve internal controls over small arms parts, focusing on the extent to which small arms are lost or stolen at two selected Army facilities.

GAO noted that: (1) in response to GAO recommendations, the Army created a Small Arms Task Force to address inventory and physical control weaknesses over small arms. Because of their cost, vital role in defense missions, and sensitivity to theft, military small arms require careful management and control.

In response to a congressional request, GAO investigated certain aspects of Department of Defense (DOD) procurement, management, and disposition of small arms including the M2 machine gun. The M2 machine gun has been used by all U.S.

military components. GAO discussed the Army's management of small arms parts at six Army and National Guard installations. GAO noted that: (1) as a result of its review, the Army has uncovered previously Military Small Arms Management thefts of small arms parts by a national guardsman at the Michigan Army National Guard; (2) military small arms parts are frequently and illegally sold at national gun shows, and are increasingly.

The authors do not always use what I believe to be the standard U.S. terminology.
